And how common are these allergies?

Yes, gold alloy can cause allergies. And 18K gold would be better because there are few of them.

I won't go so far as to say they're common, but it happens enough that jewelers supply jewelry that people with such problems can use.

It's not the gold that causes the reaction. It is the nickle that is added to make the gold stronger. The higher the K number, the lower the amount of nickle. 14K 18K and 24K which is very soft because it has the most gold.

I have problems with itchy ears with a 14K wire. If I use 18K I have no reaction at all.

Gold can not cause allergies. It is the other metals they mix in with the gold to make it stronger and change the color.

Most US gold is 14K. Try "European" gold which is 18K.
If you still have problems, try white gold which uses different base metals. You may not be allergic to white gold. If that does not work, try "Saudi" gold which is up to 23K.

If that still does not work, get platinum. It is worth more anyway and lasts longer.

Yes but it's rare. That would depend on if you are allergic to gold or not.

Yes, so can silver and nickel. If you sweat the absorption will be increased.
