join the army! its great fun...apparently?

Question

cannae be bothered joinin the army just to find out the answer to their riddle so i'll post it to you guys instead.

you find yourself at a bridge that you know will be compromised in 17 minutes. you have a torch and three dependants/evacuees.
the bridge can only take two people at any one time.
its night time and you need a torch to cross the bridge.
you only have one torch.
it will take you 1 minute to cross the bridge.
it will take evacuee #1 2 minutes to cross the bridge.
it will take evacuee #2 5 minutes to cross the bridge.
it will take evacuee #3 10 minutes to cross the bridge.
how do you all get across within the alloted time?

actually to be fair this isn't exactly how the question was asked. originally they allowed the possibility of sacrificing a member of the group for the benefit of the others.

heard this on an ad for the army on the radio. station was planet rock, probably the best station i've found to have on throughout the day (it aint too easy to change). aint got an answer to the conundrum? jus give us good radio stations and their tunings instead.

i come back - 3 mins
#2 and #3 cross - 13 mins
#1 brings torch back - 15 mins
me and #1 go back over - 17 mins

Whoever said you had to take the bridge? You said you need the torch to cross the bridge but you didnt say crossing the bridge is neccessary thefore you dont really need the bridge.
You have to find another way. You never said the bridge is your only option either.


Your mission is to get across not get across specifically using the bridge.
You dont have to neccisary have to take the bridge because you didnt say i wa slimited it to it. Also the mission is not to secure the bridge.Its to get across to the other side like i said.

So therefore at most it takes 10 minutes for a group to get across at most which means you will have enough time anyways. So if we all went across on foot without having to go on the bridge the group would surely be able to make it anyway or at least those who survive if this is a combat scenerio which i am assuming. or maybe call in for helo support. If they are any boats also around by the bridge thats a oppertunity.

Or you call in mortar/ artillary strikes to scare them off away the bridge .but dont strike them too close near the bridge.

also you cant carry more then 2 people on a bridge which means it would be impossible to go accross the bridge with everyone with me.

If not you and the evacues will have to swim accross and might have to drop some extra equipment to get across faster in time.

because if that were the case some of my men would get easily soptted on the bridge and killed right away or the enemy if cunning enough would wait till everyone is on the bridge wait to only a few get across and destroy the bridge while i get stuck on the other side with the enemy leaving me trapped inside and sorrounded, turning into a counter attack.

Also if all that is impossible then the answer is you dont cross the bridge

you yourself is your 1rst priority because without you there is no mission to carry out.

if you try to cross the bridge like that then you just waste good soldiers that can be used for a effective attack.

Unless maybe you dont use a torch. dont they give you thermal visions?

This is so easy im a freshman in highschool and i figured it out you have a torch that is on fire you find a stick take your shirt of and light it on fire its that simple that way evacuee 2 and 3 go first than you and 1 go come on its common since of course i always think of ways to light things on fire so just make a nother torch come on!!!!!!

Im shure thatz not the right answer but it was worth a shot lol

Carry them all across yourself. The whole thing will only take 6 minutes leaving you 11 minutes of extra time to take a nap.
