because he was a fat guy and his body ate up his fat that he got from the ice cream sundays also.
When ever you are starving and your body needs food, if you take too long your body starts to use up any fat as food that it has in its body and then if theres no more fat, muscle and soon you start too die.
unless your trying to be corny and the "deserted" island is a island of deserts like ice cream.
