Okay I have an Akita puppy 14 weeks old and he is suffereing from some sort of allergie. He is on z/d perscription food from the vet, pills twice a day and a spray and he dose not seem to be getting any better. Something tells me it is not a food allergie but something that he is coming in contact with. He has been on all this stuff since saturday!! He can not have treats or anything right now!! He was on Royal Caine Large breed puppy before the vet switched him. My quetion is to eperienced people please should we be seeing a difference by now if it was a food allergie???

We are going to give the food a month and go from there and yes we are planning on doing allergy testing done after to month. We also found out it may be the beauty bark in the yard so we are removing that this weekend!! I do not care what the cost of the vet bills are, to me that is the resposiblty you take on when you get a dog. He is like a child to us!

I have an 8.5-month-old mixed breed dog who was diagnosed broadly with "allergies" about two weeks ago. From what the vet has told me and my reading on the subject, it's often extremely difficult to determine what exactly is causing allergies in a dog. My dog is extremely itchy, bites at his paws, and just has a lot of "pinkness" in his ears, paws, muzzle, etc. I've read that California Natural dog food is extremely good for dogs with allergies, and that it often works when other foods don't. I'm planning to switch to it.

According to my vet, it can take 6-8 weeks for food allergies to "clear up" after switching foods. However, it's likely that your dog is not simply allergic to his food. You definitely need to give it more than a week before you decide that the change of food hasn't helped. I waited over a month after changing my dog's food the first time before I took him to the vet and he was diagnosed. It's possible it could've taken even longer than that to see a change.

Good luck. I know the allergies thing is frustrating. My vet told me that this is likely an issue we'll be managing for the rest of my dog's life, and treatment may take many forms. She says we just have to wait and see how he responds to the pills and medicated shampoo he's on now, and go on from there.

Have you done an allergy test? It will cost a bit but it may be able to pin it down. My APBT when she was a few weeks old had a rash and was scratching all the time. The test showed a slight allergy to dust mites, big chance she is not get away from that in my house. The other thing was an allergy to meat products. From the vet I got a spay, Genesis, for when she gets a rash and a medicated shampoo, Malasab. I have been feeding her Eukanuba F/P, fish and potato. She is 4 years old now and has very few problems.

i have a 3.5 yr old weimaraner- with food allergies.

i can't say about your pup, but with my dog he's fine until about 10-60 minutes after ingesting what he's allergic to before he busts out in hives and red spots with the occassional bump or ten.
it takes him about a min of 12 hours to start to have the redness 'calm down'...
if he's got a food allergy then watch what he's getting into.

it could be 'people food bites'... it could be licking crumbs off the floor. somehow it's getting in there though. it takes tons of patience, but once you figure it out (my weim and wheat of any type do not get along) it's easy peasy. :)

good luck- and don't get discouraged.
OH!
it could be your laundry detergent btw- try the "free" versions.
