There was an H-16, the Curtiss Flying Boat, which does exist around WW1, so it should exist around 1918.

AH designation did not exist until AH-1 Cobra was built by Bell-Textron in 1967, though the AH-56 Cheyenne was technically first AH-chopper (never formally entered service though). H was not used for helicopters until 1948 when the Army and Air Air Force established the formal naming system for all the military aircrafts. Before 1948 R was used for helicopters (Rotary Wing).

EDIT: slight correction, H was used by the US Navy for some helis as early as the 1920's. HOWEVER navy don't use any prefix, so there's no way navy could have fielded an AH.

So I'll have to say you got some facts mixed up here. There was no such thing as AH-16 in 1918.

never heard of it,

The Cobra was the AH-1 it first appeared in the late 1960's and was built by Bell. It was the first purpose built attack helicoper in military service. There was and is no AH-16. AH means Attack Helicopter, and in 1918 (the end of World war 1) the idea of a helicopter was nothing but a pipe dream. The first helicopters didnt appear in the service untill late in World War 2 (1939-1945)
Sorry but you must have some false info there.

I think you may have the wrong designation for the helicopter. There is a Cobra attack helicopter, but it was not built in 1918.

Here are some sites about the Cobra:

http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/systems/aircraft/ah-1.htm
(Notice it mentions the AH-1G model, perhaps you were looking for that one?)

http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/ac/ah-1.htm

And, of course, Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AH-1_Cobra

Do a Google search for "Cobra Helicopter", or "Super Cobra", etc.
