the word is kindergarten. i know kinder means children in german. So is garten a word in another language? If so what does it mean?

The word means 'children's garden' in German.

By the way, you are correct, 'kindergarten' is writen with a T and not a D, like Martha said. In Spain "kindergarten" is 'parvulitos'.

It means garden in German so it literally means garden of children.
In English is kindergarden, replacing the t for a d and if translate that into Spanish which in some Spanish speaking countries is used it would be "Jardín de Niños" kinder=niños=kids garten=garden=jardín

Garten means garden. In Spanish its called "jardín de infantes"; in French "jardin d'enfants; in Portuguese "jardim-de-infância.

and in Spanish it would translate to

Jardín
where kids go till the age they are qualified to start normal primary school.
