It is now. Reading up on interviews, it is definitely being considered as a group just like any other group. Republicans, Christians, Liberals, Pagans. I'm seeing it capitalized in many areas. Of course, I see it isn't capitalized in other areas as well. But it seems with all the media and the drama that Dawkins has stirred up, it is slowly being made into a "Special Interest Group". =)

Until christians stop capitalizing god and christ I will capitalize Atheist and leave the lesser beliefs lower case.

Note that Jesus does rate a capital letter because that is a person's name. I also would capitalize Yahweh, Zeus, and Harry Potter because those are the proper names of fictional characters.

I never capitalize atheist unless it's part of an organization's name (e.g., Atheist Alliance), but I do capitalize Humanist, as is encouraged by the International Humanist and Ethical Union (IHEU). http://www.iheu.org/

Well, english-wise, it's ok. I'm not atheist, but I see no big deal about it. They're entitled to write the word the way they want it just as Homosexuas, Bi-sexuals, and Transexuals are. These are people who put pants on a leg at a time just as you and I.

Why is that so important? I`ve seen a lot worse grammar here at Yahoo!Answers. There are far more important issues to discuss, but whatever floats your boat.

We should move on from the capitalisation of 'god' and 'atheist' to more important things, such as how many angels can dance on the head of a pin.
