I think a compromise is best. There are times when it is best to cross your legs, like when you're wearing a skirt and/or in certain types of company. Other times...well, the heck with it. I think you should discuss when and where she should cross her legs rather than asking her to do it all the time.

I agree with meg. crossing legs is not good for the hips or circulation. Legs together with ankles crossed is correct for a lady. Look at pictures of the royal family and you will see that is how the women sit. If its important for you that your daughter sits with legs crossed, then you have to be the parent and every time she is sitting, you need to insist that she sits with her legs crossed. I dont think you should do that though.

I can understand your point about modesty and the fact she's approaching the age where she needs to start thinking about become a "young lady", but crossing your legs is not necessarily healthy- it can lead to circulation problems, variciose veins, and even blood clots. Sure she's a child now, but if it becomes habit- when she's older and these health issue become more valid, it would be a difficult habit to break. Just give a gentle reminder once in a while for her to sit up straight and keep her knees together if she's all sprawled out.

Why do you want her to cross her legs? Most doctors will tell you that it is not a healthy practice. Better she should sit with her legs together and her ankles crossed. It is more comfortable and less harmful to the knees and your circulation.

Gesh, she's 10, let her be 10. Worry about the leg crossing around 12, when she notices boys

Don't encourage it--it's not good for your circulation.
If you want her to sit properly, either have her sit with her feet flat on the floor, legs/knees together, or have her cross her ankles and tuck her legs to one side under her chair.

having your legs crossed makes it harder for you blood to flow. it's not a good idea, it makes your veins pop out in the backs of your knees, not attractive. maybe she should cross her ankles or something else.
