Since Joseph was a carpenter, it's reasonable to assume that he was learning the trade.
Cheers :-)

Being a kid, going to school, learning the way of a carpenter's son, living a perfect life even as a child.
Wish
By: Joy Williams
For just a moment, I wish I could have been there
To see your first breath, hear your very first word
Tell me, did you ever fall and scrape your knee?
Did you know your wounds would one day heal the world?
For just one moment I wish I could have seen you growing
Learning the ways of a carpenter’s son
Just a little boy, gazing at the stars
Did you remember creating every one?
If you had passed by would I have seen a child or a king?
Would I have known?
I wish I could have been there.
My only wish is to see you face to face
I wish I could have been there
Just to see you Jesus, face to face
For just a moment I wish I could have been there when you left your footprints upon the waves
To walk along beside you, never look away
Just your whisper and the wind and sea obey
To see you with the people, to feel the healing in your touch
I wish I could have been there.
My only wish is to see you face to face
I wish I could have been there
Just to see you Jesus, face to face
To see you pray under God and the moon
Laying down your word, with each tear
To see you walk this lonely road
Willing to die for me…
You took my cross and gave your life…
I wish I could have been there.
My only wish is to see you rise again!
I wish I could have been there
My only wish is to see you face to face
Someday you’ll be there, I’m gonna be there
I’ll see your face, your mercy, your grace
I’m gonna see you, Jesus, face to face

I think Jesus, if that's who you are referring to, was being raised up by God so that he would be able to handle His mission. Yes, even He would have to acquire certain skills and experience to bring heaven upon this earth.
Pursuing the answer is more diverting than significant, however, like asking, "Who created God?". What difference does it really make in our personal lives as we endeavor to be good sons and daughters?

Who cares?
Who cares that the apple trees are being 'fed' with dung fertilizers in order to suplly you with the sweet and tasty apples?
Therefrom came the saying: The taste of the apple is in the eating!
Who cares what hapened with Jesus during 12 to 30, or He being married to Mary Magdalene, etc., etc.? The taste of Jesus is in the 'eating' ("Eat my flesh!"). Sweet and tasty, such that you will not care the story-teller-creator.

Noone knows, probably some of the same things the rest of world was doing, living life and being a carpenter. And He is our Lord and Savior, thank you...

That's a long time... You've got puberty, high school, college, a drug phase, and a whole bunch of other things that might have happened during that time.
