Chocolate is in fact toxic to dogs. The reason being is that chocolate contains Theobromine (a compound similar to caffeine), which causes irregular heartbeat and cardiac arrest if enough is ingested. No dog should ever be given chocolate. White chocolate contains the least Theombromine and Dark chocolate/Baker's chocolate contains an astounding amount.
Possible side effects include staggering, laboured breathing, vomiting, diarhea, abdominal pain, tremours, fever, heart rate increase, arrythmia, seizures, coma, and even death .
If a dog ingests chocolate, immediate induction of vomiting is the best. To do this, put a little vanilla ice cream in a bowl for your dog (for taste!) and mix with hydrogen peroxide (amount depends on the weight of the dog) and a teaspoon of salt. This will induce vomiting. If a dog has consumed the chocolate while you were not home and it has been in his/her system for 1 hour or more, an immediate vet visit is in order. Your veterinarian will give your dog activated charcoal which will absorb the toxicity.

If you have any hydrogen peroxide around the house make the dog drink maybe 1/2 teaspoon at a time until he throws up. If the dog starts acting crazy and hyper take it to the vet immediately! The fudge probably won't hurt the dog too much because it has sugar and other stuff in it. Baker's chocolate is extremely dangerous for dogs.
I came home to find my 20 pound dog chewing on a block of milk chocolate one time and she was fine. Good luck!

Chocolate is very toxic for dogs. Your lucky you don't have ants too. Call another Vet. If the Vet you called told you to make him puke, he should of given you some kind of instructions to do so. Take him "to the vet" that would be the "smart" thing to do. Good luck, and next time don't leave chocolate laying around, that is just plain gross leaving food just lying around.

If you have a big dog, he might be all right: All that mass will give him more room to spread that chocolate out in.
In any case, watch him. And take him in to the vet. Since your dog ate that fudge last night, I don't think making him throw up is going to get anything out now.

A little chocolate is okay but a large amount is toxic. When my sister's dog ate junior mints the vet made her put him in the tub and give him peroxide. This, of course, made him throw up over and over. Anyone who tells you chocolate and dogs are a myth is not educated on the subject. You should call the vet and tell them how much chocolate the dog ate.

The amount of chocolate your dog can handle depends on the size of your dog. If it's a big dog, that amount of chocolate shouldn't hurt it. I'm surprised your vet didn't talk to you more about this and ask questions about your dog. I would call your vet again and if they still aren't very helpful... call another local vet.

how big is the dog? if small, make it puke, if larger it likely will be ok. I had a 20 lb dog that ate a pan of fudge off the counter while I was in the shower! OMG he had dirahhea....

Dont freak out yet, it depends on how much chocolate, and how bit the dog is. The going rate is one ounce of chocolate per pound of dog. (none is good but thats the lethal dose)
thats for milk chocolate, dark chocolate and bakers chocolate isnt as bad (but still not good)
Check for heart rate (you can get a pulse from the back leg..)

Your dog will be fine. Just make sure it keeps eating food and gets lots of water. Unless your dog starts acting weird you should not have to contact the vet.

My dogs eat chocolate a lot. It takes 14 grams of BAKERS chocolate to kill a dog,===14 LBS. of regular chocolate. Don't worry the dog will be fine. My dogs are 2 and 3 and their fav. treat is peanut butter M&M's
