I have been doing a lot of thinking in joining the marines. The only problem is I have been a drinker/smoker for the past 3 years pretty hardcore for 2 1/2 yrs. I'm at a point in my life were I think I should join, I'm not someone that can keep a job very well. I try to stop drinking and get in shape but I always find myself getting **** faced every once in awhile and ruining it for me. How does marine corps enlistment work for people like me? I think i need this disacpline in my life and I am ready to make that step thanks!

Well I don't know of any other place that I would want to go. If I cared about dieing I wouldn't even be thinking about this lol. I am just killing myself drinking and smoking. My reason for joining because I think the discipline and stuff could make me a different man. Were I live it is a small town you can't just walk away from this type of stuff as easy as you think. Counsler says to make new freinds, you can't make new friends around here. I just had a friend come back from iraq and he is the strongest person I know. He knows what he wants and nothing can discourage him. Anyways the reason I am asking just to get some info and just looking for something different. thanks for the replys!

i have been in the marines for 4 years now. in boot camp you will not be allowed any cigs or booze obviously, so you will quit stone cold. i have seen it done and truthfully you will be under stress the first few weeks. you won't even know that you are missing them. the marine corps will instill the discipline that you seek for your life. It will be your responsibility to maintain that discipline when alcohol is available to you again. DO NOT enlist and revert to drinking if you cause problems when you drink. You will destroy your own career. Be sure the USMC is what you are looking for. Good luck

no offense, pal. But if you don't even have enough person will and ability to stop yourself from drinking and/or smoking then quite frankly, i don't see how in the hell you are going to make it through the vigourous boot camp that you go through to earn the title of a United States Marine. There is definately discipline, moral, ethics and many other values that you can gain through the Corps, but you have to WANT to be a warrior, not just want discipline. If its discipline you want, maybe you should try becoming a little more head strong and if you decide to join the Marines, the best of luck to you and i hope you make one heck of a warrior

The Marines (or Army, Navy or Air Force) will definitely provide discipline and structure. The problem is that none of that will specifically address your drinking/smoking. Yes, your opportunities will be limited, but after basic training you'll still be able to get s**tfaced once in a while. Smoking is allowed as well. Of course, the services' emphasis on physical fitness may help steer you in the right direction. If you really want it, you should do it, but don't join hoping it will automatically help you deal with specific issues. You've got to have the desire.

Military discipline is a good thing but if that is the only reason then I think it would be a mistake and you would find yourself in trouble with whatever branch you chose. The marines are a tough bunch to make it in under the best situations and yours is far from that. I think you should talk to a recruiter and maybe they can set you on a path that would be good for you.

first of all you need to pass an initial physical test even to be eligible to enlist, unlike any other branch. I think you would stop doing what you are doing and change if you are serious about joining. I did, smoking, drinking, all of that and you know what? it was not hard at all if you have the determination which you are going to need if you want to be a marine

circulate Marine Corps. in case you ask everybody in the different branch what they do for a residing they'll inform you their job - "i'm a soldier.", "i'm a truck motive force."... in case you ask a Marine, they'll inform you - "i'm a Marine." there is something diverse on the subject of the Marines. we are this united states's elite combating tension. The Marine Corps is extra problematical than different branches, we've a harder boot camp (it relatively is 13 weeks, no longer 9), and we've a extra suited experience of satisfaction in ourselves by fact we are Marines. (it relatively is to no longer say that the different branches don't have a stable experience of satisfaction in themselves. We merely have extra... by fact we are Marines.) some call it egotistical... yet hiya, we are Marines, it relatively is merely the way we are. Why can we act the way we do? by fact history has shown to us that the Marines are extra useful, extra suited and extra sturdy than the different branches. Plus, the robe blues ought to even get the ugliest MF'er available a Sally or 2 of his very own. Regardless which branch you settle directly to connect, take exhilaration on your determination. You get out of the militia what you put in to it. as far as chatting alongside with your mum and dad approximately this - enable them to comprehend that it is what you should do, no longer choose to do, yet ought to do. prepare them how this determination will make you a extra useful individual and tell them on the subject of the advantages of fixing right into a member of. Hell, deliver them to the recruiters place of work with you so as that they might ask questions. remember, once you notice the recruiter, do no longer sign something until eventually you're helpful of what you pick. as quickly as you sign the contract, you paintings the militia and you will be able to't end. it relatively is a criminal criminal accountability. additionally, verbal provides do no longer propose something, get it in writing.

Well, the problem is, when you get out of boot camp you will have your freedom again, and you'll probably find yourself falling into your old habits. If your drinking is causing you to lose jobs as a civilian, that's hard. If your drinking causes you to be discharged from the Marines it could potentially be a felony (or the equivelent of a felony, anyway.)

The Marines will definitely take care of things for you. THEY tell you what to do, when to do it, and how. You won't have any time to think for yourself.
What is the main thing driving you to the Marines?
What about the Air Force? You'll never sleep in a tent or a foxhole, you only eat one MRE while in basic training, basic training is only 8 weeks, physical trainging in high schools is harder than AF PT.

The Marine Corps isn't designed to be a "Dry out Hospital". It is designed to prepare you to go kill people. They will handle the discipline for you!! USMC 60-68

I think you need to straighten out your personal issues! The Marines wont straighten them out for you. You are liable to be discharged or in the brig somewhere.

Not a good time to join anyway unless you have a death wish!
