The snake is never called Satan or Lucifer in Genesis. But the concept of a snake is so horrible to a Baptist that if you had an artillery piece at one end of a long hall and a harmless black snake at the other, the Baptist would knock the artillery piece out of the way to get away from the snake.

Where does it say that the snake was Lucifer? I've never heard that before....
Besides, who says Lucifer can't leave hell now and then? Getting kicked out of Heaven didn't necessarily restrict him from having influence on earth.

Lucifer (Fallen Angel) has not yet been sent to hell. This will occur upon the judgement of God upon the Earth (Post second coming of Christ)
Rev. 21:1-10
And I saw an angel coming down out of heaven, having the key to the Abyss and holding in his hand a great chain. 2 He seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil, or Satan, and bound him for a thousand years. 3 He threw him into the Abyss, and locked and sealed it over him, to keep him from deceiving the nations anymore until the thousand years were ended. After that, he must be set free for a short time.
4 I saw thrones on which were seated those who had been given authority to judge. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded because of their testimony for Jesus and because of the word of God. They had not worshiped the beast or his image and had not received his mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and reigned with Christ a thousand years. 5 (The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were ended.) This is the first resurrection. 6 Blessed and holy are those who have part in the first resurrection. The second death has no power over them, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with him for a thousand years.
Satan's Doom
7 When the thousand years are over, Satan will be released from his prison 8 and will go out to deceive the nations in the four corners of the earth--Gog and Magog--to gather them for battle. In number they are like the sand on the seashore. 9 They marched across the breadth of the earth and surrounded the camp of God's people, the city he loves. But fire came down from heaven and devoured them. 10 And the devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

Because he hasn't been sent to Hell yet. Right now he has access to the entire universe and can even stand before God's throne. But at the end he will be cast into the bottomless pit.

that was in Genesis. he still had access at that time to travel from heaven to earth and back to heaven as he pleased.
you'll also see that later in the old testament, in the book of Job, he still has access to earth and back to heaven during the time Job was being tested.
God is forgiving and didn't officially have enough and kick him out, down upon the earth until...the book of Isaiah. See Isaiah 14:12-15
He'll actually be sent to hell come judgment day, see the book of Revelation. Until then, his goal is to make our lives hell upon the earth and take as many with him as possible upon the 2nd coming.

He is prince of the power of the air, free to roam the earth for a time.....until Armageddon when he is defeated and chained and thrown into hell. It's not so much he was placed in hell but that he was cast out of Heaven.

First of all lets establish that God, being God, knew in His infinite wisdom what was going to happen. Now, the devil or satan if you choose, is everywhere, tempting us all to sin. We all give in from time to time, fortunatly, God forgives sin. What kind of worship would God have received if man had no choice other than to worship Him. It would have been a worship of no substance, Adam and Eve would have worshiped God, because they had no other choice. The presence of the devil, gave them choice, they made the wrong choice, as we do everyday. But now, we are given the free will to worship God or the devil. The choice is yours and mine.

it was the devil: the being formally known as Lucifer.
and the devil isn't in Hell. Hell holds souls not spirits, and the devil is a spirit being, as are all angels and demons. the devil doesn't even own Hell. he's on Earth, in the world of men.
