Are you looking for writers of pet training books?
Patricia McConnell is excellent, so is Suzanne Clothier, Pat Smith, and Karen Pryor. Look for their books at http://www.dogwise.com

When you look for a trainer, ask your vet or your local shelter for recommendations. It's best to go somewhere that you and the dog will be in class & learning together - never just hand your dog over to a stranger to train for you. Look for a trainer who uses clickers or positive methods to build your relationship with your dog, so it listens to you because it wants to, not because it's afraid not to. Avoid trainers who use choke collars, other physical punishment(aka 'corrections'), or Alpha Rolls. Avoid anyone who wants to attribute every behavior problem to 'dominance' - dogs are complex, and attributing a fear-based behavior to dominance can cause all sorts of problems. Always ask to observe a class prior to signing up - watch to see if the dogs and their owners are having fun, make sure the instructor is clear and answers questions, and that no dogs are completely out of control & disruptive to the rest of the class (those dogs should be in private lessons).

Hope this helps!

Boy is that a broad question. What kind of training?? Any particular part of the world??
I'll go with June Christensen of Holway Golden Retrievers in the UK.
Rex Carr was the best trainer to ever hit the ground in the US.
Then there is Mike Lardy in Wisconsin, Don Remein in Montana, Danny Farmer in Texas, Joe Leptick in Alberta, Gunther Rumsfield in Nova Scotia.

Oh, but do I have to forget about me???? ;))

Are you asking for a pet trainer or a show dog trainer?
If you are talking about a pet then the best trainer is you. For a show dog I have no idea.
