It is fairly common but is also rather tacky. Unfortunately in today's society, less attention is paid to what is right and more attention is paid to 'how much can I get?'.
I'd forget the box, anyone who wants to give money can simply hand him a check or cash quietly.

Put the box out and put on there Graduation Cards! If they want to stick money in there, let them. Just make sure you put on there Graduation cards. Seal the box ! Everyone does different things for graduation. I can assume everyone would think he'll see the cards later after everyone goes home, that way he doesn't have to look at all them now and risk them getting lost. People like to save their graduation cards, I did.

If the box has Dollar Signs all over it, or a lable that says "PUT MONEY HERE", then YES! It would be tacky.
If not, 18 inches square is a pretty good size, It could hold cards, rather than letting them just slide all over the table...
Of course, it's His graduation, and it's YOUR son, so it's Your choice.
If You don't like the idea, don't use it, regardless of what anyone else tells you.
Make sure this day, and his Wedding day bring HIM & YOU Joy, because they aren't about anyone else.

This would be more than tacky. Those attending the party will be family, friends of the family and your son's friends who also graduated. Family and family friends will probably bring a gift. His friends just came for the fun. Forget your sister-in-laws lack of taste and have a great party for your son.

This is common. Graduation party guests will bring, at least, a card wishing the graduate well. Thus, the box isn't necessarily for money collection. It's simply somewhere to put any cards for the graduate. It's good to have, especially if the wind picks up.
Have someone keep an eye on it, though. Some unscrupulous person may have designs on a quick payday.

I graduated last year and went to many parties but I never saw something like this. I think it would be tacky, if they want to give the person money they will put it in a card or just give it to them.

I'd go ahead and use it. Lots of people give money for these things and having a place to put the cards is a good idea.

Don't use the box. Kinda like birth announcements it screams "give me my gift!"
Sure, people give grads money, but it isn't something you or your son should expect by any means. A gift is a gift. The box may give the wrong impression. I'd be embarrassed to have one out.
They can give the gift, if they want to bring one, to your son when they come talk to him and congratulate him.

For a graduation party, it would be tacky. I have seen this at weddings but not graduation parties. They can just hand the money to the child or parents.

could also be for cards. Used similar item at nephew's wedding. People left many cards in the box, some with money and some were just cards. If you are uncomfortable do not use the item.
