Benign tumors are made of the same tissue that surrounds them. For example, myomas are made of the same muscle of the womb, but their distribution seems a whirlpool and not smooth and contractile muscle.

Malign tumors are made of anarchic and disorganized tissue (and may even be different from the tissue that surrounds them). This is the clearest in teratomas of ovary or testes, made of hair, teeth, etc. (This is due because eggs and sperm are capable of generating any tissue for the possible new being)

Benign perhaps the word you are looking for? Tumors are 'abnormal' growth of tissue. Bit like growing an extra finger! As to what causes them to grow, if they knew we would have a cure? Your niece will probably have a lifetime of health with a few operations along the way to remove the extra growths. Cancer or malignant Tumors are a wee bit different because they have a tendency to 'spread' to other parts of the body. So you have a extra finger on your hand and then grow another finger on both feet and so on.

Tumors are made of the same cells as the surrounding tissue, usually. They just grow abnormally fast due to an abnormality in their "code".
