John the Baptizer was sent ahead of the Messiah to announce the coming of the Lord. He was the miracle child born to a High Priest named Zacharia and wife Elizabeth.
To know Jewish law you would understand that HE was the God-chosen successor of the Jewish priesthood, but couldn't take that position in the natural because the priesthood was over when the Christ; the Messiah; was baptized, thus ushering in the NEW and FINAL High Priest: Jesus of Nazareth.
John was hand picked by God to announce, ordain and be the forerunner of Jesus and John and Jesus were blood cousins and both miracle children. John wasn't some poor wild man, he wore the best garments: like saying he wore cashmere and he ate what we would call: healthfood. God's plan. He didn't do the "temple" thing because it was corrupt and God directed him to do the REAL thing God's way, by setting Jesus IN His rightful office and ministry. Jesus did no miracles until he was baptized by John in water and by God in the Holy Spirit. John was the TRUE high priest of God until Jesus, then he decreased as Jesus increased.

john1: 19Now this was John's testimony when the Jews of Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was. 20He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, "I am not the Christ.[g]"
21They asked him, "Then who are you? Are you Elijah?"
He said, "I am not."
"Are you the Prophet?"
He answered, "No."
22Finally they said, "Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?"
23John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, "I am the voice of one calling in the desert, 'Make straight the way for the Lord.' "[h]
24Now some Pharisees who had been sent 25questioned him, "Why then do you baptize if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?"
26"I baptize with[i] water," John replied, "but among you stands one you do not know. 27He is the one who comes after me, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie."
28This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

I can do it in less- John The Baptist was the one that pronounced the birth and ministry and salvation of Christ. He taught the message of repentance and what that meant- He lost his head due to his belief in Christ- and realized throughout his whole life- that he needed to live - this way- all of Him and less of me was what He said- and we are to do the same.

He was born of a miracle to a barren mother. He was the cousin of Jesus of Nazareth. He was a "preparer of the way" to the Messiah. He was beheaded at the request of dancer's mother when told by the ruler that she could have all she asked for up to half of his kingdom.

Anointed of God to be a prophet, priest, and king unto the Lord Jesus just as God is calling you to be. Have you been anointed by Christ Jesus? He is preparing those who will reign with Him during His 1000 year rule on this earth. Now is the time to prepare..
