to ordain blacks to the priesthood? And I have never heard of this.

Besides, it would be totally unconstitutional for any branch of the government to tell the LDS church to give the priesthood to anyone. The government can't establish and church, nor can it tell any church how to believe.

The priesthood is not a job, as one postor here said something which would lead. It was not breaking any equal opportunity laws.

Phoenix, like I said, the priesthood is not a job. We didn't discriminate in membership or jobs or anything. The thing is, if one didn't like that we didn't give the priesthood to blacks, then one didn't have to be a member of our church. Blacks WERE joining our church, even knowing they couldn't hold the priesthood. Why was that, I wonder? Why did the only ones who cared if blacks didn't have the priesthood were the ones who didn't even believe in our priesthood?

However, phoenix, you still didn't give me any specifics on this supposed Supreme court case, like what year, who vs. who, and all that. I want the specifics.

The thing is, the LDS church is a tax-exempt organization. In order to maintain tax-exempt status, an organization must follow certain rules. One of those rules is that the policies of the organization do not go against fundamental state policies. One of those fundamental state policies that must be catered to is not discriminating against people based on race. The government's pursuit of equality and civil rights trumps giving tax-exempt status, even to churches, or even trumps staying out of church business.

One example of this is the case of Bob Jones University, which used to discriminate in admittance based on race. The Supreme Court ruled that this was a violation of fundamental state policy and should not be subsidized by tax exemption. This would also be the case for LDS ministers - the church could not discriminate membership in the clergy based on race.

Let me know if you need more info on this.

The head of the mormon church in 1978, Spencer Kimball, claims to have had a revelation that black men should be able to become priests in the church and be married in the temple. The Supreme Court had nothing to do with it, but perhaps public opinion did.

I don't think the Supreme court did do that. I think the Church did that so they could have a better B-Ball team at BYU. Priesthood is like Bah Mitzvah, it's just something you get when you reach a certain age. It's like the lowest rank you can have and be an actual member.

I've never heard of that either (sounds like a lie to me). I agree with what you have said. Don't worry about it.

not that it's any more right to push your beliefs on other people and pretend to be a good citizen just because you don't drink caffeine, yet the coke processing plant is owned by Mormons. i would rather talk to someone who drinks a gallon of Coke every hour than to someone who is a polygamist with underaged girls.
