Barium sulphate is used in x-rays of the gastro-intestinal (G.I.) tract as a contrast medium to highlight the soft tissues of the esophogus, espophogeal sphincter, stomach and duodenum, to aid in detection of ulcers, haital hernias, and acid-reflux-disease. Barium sulphate is suspended in water and is swallowed while x-rays are taken of the upper G.I. tract. Barium sulphate is also used in enemas to aid in detecting problems with the lower G.I tract.
