TMJ is a b**** to live with. I've had it for 8 years and have tried everything. I chewed through 4 different mouth guards, had steroid injections into my jaw, and even had my joint replaced and I'm still in pain everyday.

If your jaw has been locked for a week then you need to see an oral surgeon/maxillofacial doctor. When you make your appointment be sure to ask if the doctor treats TMJ disorders as many don't. My advice is to not get stuck taking pain medications for relief. I went this route and ended up getting hooked on them. Now nothing gives me relief. I'm scheduled for a second surgery next month by a different doctor.

Don't let anyone tell you that it's all in your head. TMJ is one of the most painful disorders to have and is a true problem.....the pain is right up there with kidney stones and giving birth!

Good luck and I hope you get some relief soon.

If you want some immediate help a couple things you can do are:
massage the muscles on the side of your head just above your jaw (temporalis muscle). Massage it in an up/down direction.
stretch the muscles of your neck by sitting on 1 hand and tilting your head to the opposite side and hold it 30 seconds...do each side twice
These things will help some but you should go to see your dentist to get this fixed. You may have to go see a physical therapist who specializes in TMJ.

I would see an orthodontist, he or she may want you to see a TMJ speacialist and they are not usally far from people. I know there is one in Omaha, Nebraska. If you jaw locks for over 2 days you should see an ortho or dentist right away. So you better get going!

7 years ago I've been involved in a car wreck and even since suffered with severe on and off facial and jaw pain. I've tried almost everything western medicine had to offer and had visited countless of specialist, had done ct scans, and therapies but to no avail. The doctors I have been to had persisted that there wasn't anything wrong with me and that almost drove me crazy as I was going through hell from this condition. According to all my symptoms I was diagnosed by a holistic doctor as having TMJ and he had recommended this book to me. After following the recommendation in the book for several weeks, it had changed my life. I got immediate relief after following the unique set of exercises in the book and after 2 weeks the jaw and face pain had completely gone. I only wish I would have ordered this program years ago. It would have saved me a lot of pain and anguish.
