I think that SAFE ROOM inside a wood house is a fantasy caused by watching too many movies. What if the evil doers burn the house down - you would be like a potato wrapped in metal foil inside an oven? With modern high powered weapons and even battering rams I think it is hard to think of any construction that can keep you safe against an intruder who doesn't care about the noise he makes.

If what you really want is a hurricane-proof room (not an intruder-proof room) then get a copy of the local building codes for your town or city. They should cover what classifies a room as hurricane proof.
