I looked at the Wikipedia entry for Mexico, and was surprised to find that it has so much to offer its citizens in terms of economy, education, culture and just about everything else. It seems like people who were born there would want to stay in their home country rather than risking life and limb coming to the U.S. illegally. I just don't get it.

Why do we never see this question addressed in the media?

Wikipedia is a sound source . Everything there can be verified through other means.

Rampant poverty and Govt. corruption? We have the same problems in the U.S., but people mostly stay here.

I don't have a problem at all with legal immigration, as long as it is beneficial to American society.

Carrie - I'm talking about the info about Mexico (see link), not Wikipedia in general. If anyone disagrees, please provide a link.

Mexico is a corrupt, church controlled country. They have an uncontrolled birth rate and low literacy. I vacation in Mexico, often. A Nice place to vacation.

Read the News. View the News. The Mexican army is at war with the Mexican police over huge profit drugs.

We are not talking about a skilled person from the Philippines or a Physician from China coming to the USA...we are looking at Poor, uneducated people...many are criminals...all are Catholic. The democrats want the Illegal vote, Ted Kennedy and the Lettuce growers.

12 Million people who flood our emergency rooms, drive without insurance and account for much of the drug trade in this country.

On CNN, last evening...one newsman predicted a Civil war in the USA over Illegals. CNN: 01 may 2007..a matter of record.

Yesterday, the California police fired Rubber bullets in the crowd of demonstrators. The American people have had enough. One million truck drivers and Two million NRA members are ready to turn over Illegals to the NIS.

Enough said.

NAFTA ( North American Free Trade Agreement-Mexico, America & Canada), didn't benefits Mexicans. Many small bussines were in bankruptcy. Was unfair for the mexican side (US goberment subsidize agriculture, and Mexicans trucks can't get in the US, but US trucks do can get in Mexico, Mexican avocado-best in the world for its quality- can't get it the US because of many unreasonable excuses). This trade was made to benefit bussineses owners or managers but no employers. Workers? they weren't include in the nafta. Despite of the fact that American products are sold in Mexico at the same price as they are sold in America, the American companies settled in Mexico pay 10 times cheaper the mexican Labor (domino's pizza por exemplo).
Americans are not guilty for Mexican's problems but gobertments are, Both. And they do nothing to solve the problem. We really want the nafta to be cancelled. It will be impposible for the current administration. We want to recover our country, as you do.
Besides this problem, the FOX administration only favored American interests. and so Calderon (current president )does.
Now my question is: If Mexico solve it's problems, are Americans sure they won't need any more cheap labor? American economic inflation would grow up and maybe- I hope no- you all will have the same mexican problems.

From what I understand, about 10% of the people in Mexico have a stranglehold on 100% of the economy.

Both the National Autonomous University and the National Polytechnic Institute are tuition-free, therefore there is no excuse for anyone not to study at the university level because of lack of money. Most doctors, lawyers and engineers I have encountered in Mexico received their degrees from these universities and prosper in Mexico without having come from rich families.

what is wrong with Mexico? a lot,, but that is not the sole reason people cross the border illegally to get to the United States,,, is very simple,, here they know they are going to find a job,, why?? cause Americans are too good for some jobs,, cause no American dreams of his sons and daughters to be in a field in the cold or extreme heat working,, or cleaning offices at night, or being the maid, or working in a meat plant and having that Sweet smell of raw meat or raw chicken in their body,,, so until Americans are willing to send their kids to do those and hundred other low low paying jobs,,,, i guess people from other country's will find their way to the states legal or not,,, so when you are ready to give your kids those jobs illegals are doing now,,, they will not stop coming here.

Why don't you go visit Mexico and go somewhere outside of the nice resorts that tourists usually see- maybe even try getting a job and live there for a while, we'll see if you will be talking like this. You know what the problem with Americans is? They are ignorant, just like you are.
