Yes I do believe this is true! This religion thing though is far more complicated than peoples fear of death! On this earth there are leaders and followers, many thousands of years ago a few smart leaders of tribes, saw how the masses could be controled because of their fears!!!! Their fear of death, their fear of the crops failing, their fear of poor hunting, their fear of infertility, their fear of sickness and disease etc.etc. these select few people, the leaders came up with all this heaven and hell stuff, to scare the batookers out of the average joe, in order to control them, boost their own egos and last but not least for FINANCIAL GAIN!! Oh, by the way returning to the dirt, is going to heaven, because the dirt is God as is everything God!!!!

Common sense dude. The body turns back into dirt the soul lives on forever. And Jesus him self said broad is the road and many are those we enter Hell were the fiery worm doesn't die and there is weeping and gnashing of teeth. You need Christ ! He also said narrow is the road and difficult is the path that leads to life and few find it. We better both be opening our eyes. I was salted with fire and I still have a very hard time living a righteous life. But I know hell is Horror and Pain and referred to as fire because that is the only pain to describe it. There is also other places of punishment Hades, Death, Place of burning sulfur, Lake of fire and probably many more dungeons.Find Christ you will be amazed!

Belief in gods was first created to explain what was then though of as supernatural - lightning, thunder, fire, the sun... and yes, death.

And belief in an afterlife is something many theists are afraid to give up, because it means facing the harsh reality.

But they don't "know" about an afterlife - they just think so.

Sadly a religion is a counterfeit for something that is a lot better. Religion is a bunch of "dos" and "don'ts". God meant for man to have a RELATIONSHIP with Him NOT a religion. But sin entered the world when Adam and Eve chose to sin and brought confusion. It put a block between us and God because He is Holy and His nature demands He be seperate from sin. But He still loved His creation--man-- and still wanted to have a relationship with him, so He made a way for that block to be removed. God made himself into the form of a man (also known as the Son of God-as seen in John 3:16 in the Bible) and was born on earth, just as prophets predicted for hundreds of years. (try looking up how many prophecies Jesus fulfilled!) He lived a perfect life on earth because He was both God and man. Though God is love He is also a just God and demands that a just payment be made for sin before he allows us to have our relationship with Him renewed. We can't do that because we are sinners and can never make ouselves clean enough to come before God or pay for the wrong we've done. But since Jesus was perfect He could. That is why He died on the cross-paying for sin-and then rose up three days later-conquering death. When one puts his faith in Jesus and recognizes He is the only way to heaven and confesses it with his mouth, then that relationship with God is restored. God never intended for there to be a religion with a bunch of rules, but rather a love relationship with Him. When you love someone you want to please them. Obeying God's commands then become a delight rather then a drudge. I should know! Trusting and believing in Jesus was the best thing I ever did! Get a Bible and read the book of John especially chapter 3. It tells about a man who was highly religious, but how Jesus told him that that was not the way to get to God. Religion came about because people confused WORKING for God for KNOWING God. Hope that helps!

It's the path of least resistance for human beings. It's lazy philosophy. It's like asking why are beds soft? It's natural for a human to seek easy answers to difficult, often scary questions.

Yes, that and the fact that people didn't know anything about science and needed a way to explain things in the world.

actually if people would read their bibles it clearly says that "from dust we came and to dust we shall return".

the teaching of everyone going to heaven was created by false religion, hell is also a false doctorine. look both of these up in the catholic dictionary the encyclopedia britanica. it will tell you that neither of these exist but that they simply made them up. i know this b/c i have done the research.

It started with ancestor worship or sun worship.

Only later did it morph into promises of Heaven and threats of Hell, among other emotional hooks.

Religion is a way of dealing with the unknown. What does it matter once death comes? Nothing.
