No, you MUST notify the insurance company IMMEDIATELY, or as soon as you are physically able to or circumstances permit. If it's been 2 days since the accident, you're already late. If the insurance company wants a police report #, you can give it to them when it becomes available. Usually the number is issued immediately as soon as you file the report.

Honestly, you can call and report the claim without the police report. But since the insurance company asks a bunch of questions about the accident, such as the cars and drivers involved, the street, VIN numbers, license numbers, etc., you could wait. You can report the claim with the information you do have. Either way you are still covered and you don't have to report it the second it happens. If you wait for the report to be done, call your insurance company with it in front of you so you can give them all the information. Write down your claim number and information they give you at the end of the claim report. And keep it for future reference.

Report the accident to your insurance company immediatly so they can begin their investigation! Yes they will ask you for the police report number, so that they too can order it. If you are able and willing to get a copy yourself, go ahead and do so and pass it on to your insurance company, it will help them speed up the process.
The longer you wait to report the loss to your insurance company, the longer it will take them to investigate the accident, and pay you for your damages (if you have collision coverage) - as they cannot pay you until they have appraised your vehicles damages, and they cannot do that until you have notified them than an accident has occured.

The insurance company will ask for a police report number. That's weird that they're making you wait. Usually they give you a number right away. I would wait until you have the police report number.

Notify your insurance company immediately or as soon as you can. Explain that you were unsure when to call them. If it has just been 2 days, you should be fine.
