Sponsors pulled out, so they didn't want to lose money on the show. Logically it was the wise thing to do.

I do think that certain actions were due. However, NBC found themselves in quite a pickle.
If they fire Imus, then people would publically speak out against them with regards of free speach. People feel that in order to help reduce racism in America, we have to stop paying so much attention to it.
If they hadn't fire Imus, then NBC would have apeared to condone racist remarks. In the past, Don Imus has been known to be rude and crass, but this is the largest case of his level of unapropriate behaivior. NBC did what they could in order to protect their image.
If it were me, I would not have fired Imus. In reality, more people now know who Don Imus is then before the incedent. And i can guarentee that people would have watched him as shock radio. Sort of like Howard Stern. In a weird way, it could have been beneficial for ratings, but detremental to image.

At least it was not the N word which Kanye West proudly let a crowd of all race get a chance of a lifetime to shout out loud!

Right after they fire Al Sharpton. OTOH that guy never had a real job...
Seriously though, I always thought that "freedom of speech" applied to all jackasses, regardless of skin colour.

They fired him because all of his sponsors pulled the plug on the show.

Don't blame the networks, they only did what the sponsors dictated.
Bottom line, when no one will sponsor your show, your gone. Money talks, BS walks.

They didn't fire him because of what he said, but because his ratings would have dropped substantially and it would not have been worth it for them to continue to employ him.
It wasn't a moral move, but an economic one. In that case, yes, they should have fired him.

No. An apology would have been sufficient in my opinion. And the Rutgers team should just get over it--how much do you want to bet they wouldn't mind calling us whites honkeys or crackers?
