I'm just realizing that I can sing any song I know in the right key off the top of my head, with no references notes or music of any kind. Is that something everyone can do? If not, what is that?

Soinds like you have what musicians call "perfect pitch".

Are you saying you can name the key a song is in by listening to it. It means you are an active listener. A good skill to have for singing. Most people will go flat even if they do start on key. To develop your skills try taking a song and sing it in a key other than the key you memorized it in. Try substituting harmony notes for some of the main melody notes, don't over do it, or you'll lose the recognizable melody. (just a few)

It means that if someone old you to sing a song right here, right now, you could hit the exact note without any music playing for you and no notes in front of you.

Not everyone can do it. I can usually do it, and you should be proud you can too! It's a great talent not many people have.

whoever said it means you have perfect pitch... is stupid. perfect pitch means that someone can say "sing an a flat" and youll spit it out like nobody's business.

it does however mean that you have a good ear. it means that you can tell the difference between pitches... and its totaly normal. thats why there are intros to songs, to get the pitch in your ear. and if youve ever seen an a cappella concert, thats why we have a pitch pipe that gives us our starting notes... so we all start in the same key.

perfect pitch: you can hear a vaccuum and name the key, and you can sing in the correct key off the top of your head every time

good ear: you can tell when your in the wrong key, and you can hear harmonies etc

its a good thing to recognize... nothing wrong at all

Do you mean that you can sing a recorded song in the key in which it was recorded? A good musical memory.

i also share that skill. it's an auditory memory, just like some people have a color memory. I heard someone call it "relative pitch" which is not the same as "perfect pitch." People with perfect pitch can tell the name of the pitch. People with relative pitch are also very sensitive to someone being "off key." Is that what you mean?
