Contact the DMV in your state; follow the proceedure for replacing a lost title; happens all the time. TRansfer to him when you get it.

Remember as long as the car is titled in your name you are responsable for the car. That goes for parking tickets to insurance to high speed police chases.
. Apply for a duplicate or lost title. When you get the title you and your friend both go to the dmv and do the title transfer. Make sure you both go that way you know it has been done.

First thing is Cover Youself! ask him not to drive it until you write him a bill of sale (check with BMV in your state to see if this is legal) Then apply for a lost title. When you get it back you both fill in your required parts . Befor you give it to him again copy front and back of title for your protection.

you need to apply for a lost title, also get him to sign a bill of sale. if he gets in an accident you will be responsible. not only could he sue you but the other party may as well.
