Because Joseph Smith saw the angels after ingesting LSD. He meant to name the church the LSD church, but was so stoned he got the wording mixed up and said LDS. Because he wanted people to think he was a prophet he couldn't correct the error, so they still call it LDS.

The only thing I wonder is why they didn't use LAD for the drug considering the name is: Lysergic Acid Diethylamide - Wouldn't using an "A" make more sense than an "S"? Maybe the people calling LSD were too drugged out to even get that.

Nope. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints isn't all that similar to LSD. LDS is just a common abreviation that came around a lot later.

Perhaps it is similar to Quantrill and Quartless--just words in and of themselves.
