Winchester is out of business so be ready to get high off your wallet if you want a Winchester, especially if you want a Model 12, which is arguably the best pump shotgun ever made.
My personal pick is the Mossberg Model 500. i keep one with an 18.5" cylinder bored barrel next to the be for things-that-go-bump-in-the-night. For hunting I have a 28" barrel with screw in chokes of Full, and Modified.
If you are going to hunt anything larger than squirrel or birds, you need a 12 guage. A barrel between 22" and 28" are good hunting choices, with the shorter barrels becoming more popular these days.
And forget what you've been told about being able to order guns through the mail from the Sears Catalog. That ended back in 1968. Sure you can buy over the internet, but you still have to use a licensed dealer to complete the transaction. Since you are a beginner, I suggest you go to a reputable local gunshop and talk to the owner, not one of the hired help, the OWNER. Let him know that if he makes you happy, he will have a repeat customer. Tell him what you plan to do, and what you will need. If he is honest, he will give you good advise and not try to rob you blind on the first visit. He will be satisfied to make a moderate profit from your business for years to come.
Good Luck and Good Hunting.

There are a lot of different options depending on how much you are planning on spending. I would definitely go with a 12 guage and get a stock length barrel unless you are an avid hunter. I have a very expensive Browning shotgun which retails for nearly 1500 and I have a Marlin pump which was about 400. When I go hunting or shooting with my buddies I take the cheaper Marlin pump because it is still reliable and I don't have to worry about scratches and normal wear and tear from hunting.

Remington 870, Express priced at around $250, and Wingmaster priced at around $600..
I'd go to Cabelas, Bass Pro rather then deal with mail order and shipping to FFL dealer.
Gauge depends on quarry..
I prefer the 20 guage for quail, and 12 for pheasants and waterfowl.
For upland game you can remove the magazine limit making it a four + 1 when shooting waterfowl most require 3 shot limit.
Purchase choke tubes according to the game. Modified or Improved Cylinder in brushy areas for quail or Full choke for Pheasants, Chukar, Grouse and Waterfowl.

go for a Remington 870 Express or wingamster. The express is around $250-300, and id get it in a 12 with a 26 inch barrel. the wingmasters are hgiher priced, but better guns. once agin, id get a 12.
