Why doesn't he just ask her? If it's an unusual surname I'm sure she is used to people asking and would prefer that to people pronouncing it wrong!

The name "Tyreen" isn't French, AFAIK. The only Tyreen I know is the character "Captain (Benjamin) Tyreen" (played by Richard Harris), in the famous 1956 Sam Peckinpah western movie "Major Dundee". Either her parents/family are movie fans, or it's just an English thing. Ask her how _she_ pronounces the name.

People can't even pronounce my first name and it only consists of three letters. If people are not sure, they ask me. I tell them, if they can't get it right after the 3rd or 4th time, i let them pronounce the name however is easier for them, because they simply can't pronounce the name. Just ask your brother to ask her, and tell him to pay great attention to what characters are stressed, which ones are silent, which ones are said for longer and repeat her name a few times so that he gets it right and remembers it. It would be worse to have her say her name once and forget how she pronounces it. I always ask people how they pronounce their name, even if it is a name like Jack.
