I'm seriously considering applying for a border patrol job with the CBP. I meet the requirements and qualifications, and have visited the official website. My question is; just how tough is the physical training (boot camp)? I'm a 27 year old female who works out 3 times a week, but I'm not in really great shape. Could someone with experience in the academy give me some ideas of how difficult training will be?

I have done lots of shooting rifles and handguns (I'm a hunter), and have taken Spanish classes for 3 years.

I use to work for the Federal Bureau of Prisons and I knew some one who transferred from the US Border Patrol to our institution. The training isn't like being in the military (boot camp) they will get you into shape while you are there. It wouldn't hurt you to start running and doing exercises while you waiting to enter the academy. It will only serve to put you a little farther ahead when it comes to being in shape.
Have you done any shooting? If not are your hand strong? If not consider working them make them stronger, since it won't hurt. You may need the extra strength in your hands. Get small ball or some thing that that you can use to squeeze to gain hand strength.
Do you know if they would be sending you down to Glenco, Georgia for your training? If so, the weather is extreemly hot, humid and there are a lot of bugs down there. I went down there twice, once for the academy training and a second time for Side Handle Baton Instructor training. Both times they sent me down there in July, it was like being in h*ll. It was bad, felt like you couldn't even breath. They get what they call Black Flag days (Black Flag is raised up the pole) and that is where no one is allowed to run, since its way too hot to be out running.
My friend got out of the Border Patrol he was shot 2 times while on duty, he opted to get out it before it killed him.
Do you speak Spanish? If not you may want to start working on that since you will need to know it, if you do then you will be that much farther ahead of the game.
I wish you the best if you decide to join the Border Patrol, good luck to you with what ever you do. I'm sure that you will
do just fine. Just stay strong and remember that women do just as well as men do, you just have to really want it. If you work hard you will be just fine.

The training camp you mentioned I'm going to assume is FLETC. The Federal Law Enforcement Training Center. Located in Artisia, New Mexico. It's not just a training center for Border Patrol but all governmental law enforcement agencies. Training at this center includes agencies such as Border Patrol, FBI, NSA, FFDO, BOIA, etc. It's not reserved specifically for Border Patrol. You should be able to find more information about this center by doing a search for FLETC or Federal Law Enforcement Training Center. They are not targeting just the Mexicans. It's just the central location were all physical training is conducted for the agencies I mentioned as well as others.

The CBP also has a career opporutunity for a Customs and Border Protection Officer. I am in the hiring process right now. CBP Officers dont all work on the Mexican border. Thet are at all major ports and airports. You dont have to learn spanish unless you are down south. They go to training in Glynco, GA, but I have never been there. I was in the military, and highly doubt the training is as difficult and basic training. Good luck to you.

Not trying to make you change your mind but,why would anyone want to be a border patrol agent,I know somebody has to do it,but right now our own government all the way to our president will not support the border patrol, they send the border patrol to dangerous sections of our border where drug lords control the area, and when they do their job as they are suppose to,the corrupt mexican government which has a big investment on the drugs coming here, will make a call to Washington, and the illegals caught even with drugs on them will be freed,we have right now three agents in prison right now for doing their job,and the illegal caught, bringing drugs on a stolen car,is now a US citizen

The purpose of any law enforcement academy, to include the US Border Patrol, is to put you in shape before you hit the street!
I can only wish you the best in your endeavor, however, with the news as of late about the lack of support from above, I'd consider a double layer of body armor on my back!
Best wishes!
