i asked this guy out who seemed to make an effort to converse but ended up not being interested but his friend was. his friend was very ugly-was he trying to pick up a rejected girl from his good looking friend?

If you don't like his friend, then just politely say that you are not interested and move on.

Diamonds look pretty bad in their natual state.
You can have your preferences of course, but just because someone doesn't look like your dream boy , doesn't mean he isn't the most kindest, thoughtfull, loving person you will ever meet.
Beware of the pretty shell with nothing inside.
