Let me be clear. I believe they died in vain but perhaps you don't understand my meaning. Military DEFENSE means that if you die defending this country than your death was not in vain. If you die, and your fighting, your combat did not protect American lives than your death was in fact in vain. It's not their fault. It's leadership's fault. They should only put their lives on the line if we are in direct, iminent threat. If we are threatened and they die and win by defeating the threat than they protected American lives and their sacrifice was worth it. The thing is this. Iraq wasnt doing anything in 03. They werent buliding WMDs, they werent hiding WMDs, they werent invading Kuwait, they werent gassing Kurds..they were just sitting there..doing nothing. Let me give you one more example. If I die trying to kill a burglar who broke into my home and wanted to harm my family I died protecting my family. Death not in vain. If I die because I tried to attack some dude on the street.

It's not decided yet but, in the big scheme of things, they may have done.
But even if they were committed in the wrong way to the wrong war...
To fight alongside comrades, take risks for and with them, and if it happens, die, now that is rarely to die in vain.

If it's the military's job to protect civilians, the civilians' job is to protect the military:
to ensure they are not sent where they should not be, and that they are fully equipped and supported in the tasks on which they are deployed..

No soldier ever dies in vain, they only die serving in defence of your rights, libertys, and freedoms. Even when you want to wear your Che shirt, grab your starbucks coffee and protest your little selfish heart out.

Not entirely. Saddam is dead and he was evil. Unfortunately, oil was the prime motivation for our attack. If that's not true, then why haven't we invaded Darfur?

Our troops are dying to keep the military industrial complex fed and Corporate America's bank accounts and shareholders healthy.

Not unless the Democrats make the military pull out before the job is done.

They died doing their jobs. I don't think that makes it "in vain". Every last one was brave and died with honor.

No soldier ever dies in vain. They have fought proudly and heroicly and deserve to come home now!!!! They accomplished their mission of removing saddam and his regime. We are indebted to them all and let's not forget the thousands who have been injured and continue to feel the pain. It's our turn to take care of them, so bring them home and let the healing begin.

No, they will always be remembered in history.

Their courage outweighs everyones who prefer to sit at home and watch them fight on the news.

Soldiers that fight in any war that isn't one defending a nation's borders are sadly dying in vain.
