Dear smiley,
There is more to it than what you may have been told. Sin is rebellion against God. The Bible is God's law book and is filled with many statutes and laws. The penalty for breaking just 1 of these laws is very severe. The penalty is to spend eternity under the wrath of God or eternity in the lake of fire (hell). You see the Bible tells us, "The wages of sin is death." The "death" in view here is not physical death but the second death or to spend eternity in the lake of fire (hell).
The Lord God is perfect in all of His attributes. One of His attributes is that He is just. He cannot "overlook" sin. The law demands that the sinner spend eternity in hell for that sin. Because the Lord is also righteous, He must follow the law. However, another one of God's attributes is that He is merciful (Praise God). Thereby, the Lord determined that He would would save some of these rebels, make them His children, and take them to heaven to be with Him forever.
So, God became a man (Jesus Christ). He was born of a virgin so that He would not have a sin nature like all other men. He then became the substitute to pay the sin debt for ALL those whom He had chosen before the earth was created (Ephesians 1:3-5). The wounds Jesus suffered were not the payment for the sins pf the chosen. Jesus began suffereing in the Garden of Gethsemanae. It was here that he began to suffer the equivalent of spending eternity in hell. And it continued until He said from the cross, "It is finished." The sin debt was paid in full for those "elected" to be saved. The reason that Jesus rose from the dead on Sunday morning was to show that He was victorious over sin, death, and satan. This is why Sunday is day to honor the Lord.
I hope you can see now, that Jesus can only forgive your sins if you are one of the elect (saved). If not, you will have to pay for your sins.

Read Deuteronomy 24:16
Ezekiel 18: 3-26
Jeremiah 31:29-30
All of that will prove to you that even Jesus' death is not necessary for the forgiveness of sins of man. God, who created man is the only One who can forgive sins and you can forgive those who sin against you. You yourself should also be able to forgive yourself by being sorry for what you have done and resolve not to do the same thing again and then clear yourself from the guilt once you have done what is necessary. You have to be free but you have to strive to stay righteously for as long as you can. God is a forgiving and merciful God and that is also the image and likeness He created you to be.

God forgives sins through Jesus. No priest, pope or preacher can forgive sins.

As far as I know it is! We can only forgive one another's actions against each other, not wipe them from the Book of Life! We ask God to do that when we ask for repentance.
