look at the "Calories from fat" and the amount of Fiber.
For instance (I am just making up the # of calories for simplicity) If you have the choice between a piece of wheat toast and a scoop of ice cream (assuming they have exactly the same amount of calories) you should choose the toast. Heres why: the ice cream will have much more "calories from fat" and sugars where as the toast will have much more fiber. Complex grains are also much harder for you body to digest and there for take much more energy to digest than the sugars in the ice cream.

In moderation any thing is Ok to eat, the difference may be the GI index, for example, the choice of a medium apple with 1 carb or a couple of candies that have the same 15g of carb.

Apples are low on the GI which means the digest slower and tend not to raise your blood sugar levels as fast. Now you have the same 15grams in carbs in a couple of peices of chocolate, The carbs are from simple sugars, instead of complex carbs therefor digesting fasting and rasing your blood sugar level faster.

Apples also do have fibre and vitamines not contained in your chocolate. So overall an apple will be better then a sweet dessert treat, however given they are equal the choice is yours.

It has no nutrition, and there are more calories in a small sweet than in a large bowl of beans. This means that you will still have an almost empty tummy after the small sweet, when you could be full with the bowl of beans.

its not as nutritious, has lots of sugar which will make you hungry in a short while again since the drop in blood sugar.
