The Scripture says in part that we are not to "forsake the assembling of ourselves together as the manner of some men is", meaning that church is necessary as a refuge for our souls and a place to feed and be fed by the Word. We cannot "conduct ourselves like the rest of society" for many facets of society govern themselves only by their OWN SYSTEM of morality! The Scripture teaches us as Christians that we are to "Come ye out from AMONG THE WORLD and be a separate people", meaning that while we have to live among the world, we are to conduct ourselves in a manner based not only on the laws of the land, but the law of God. Another Scripture says, "Obey the ordinances (laws) of the land for the Lord's sake". It means to keep your nose clean so that people can see the Christian influence in your life.

If you act like "the rest of society", then in Nazi Germany you would have approved of the extermination of over 6 million people.
If you act like "the rest of society", then you would have approved of slavery.
If you act like "the rest of society", then you would have approved of denying civil rights to minorities.
If you act like "the rest of society", then you would drive drunk, as the majority of people do it as some point (at least once) during their life.

Society is usually a very poor choice for a moral compass. It tends to do what is best of the status quo and the majority.

Religions is usually a better compass, because it tends to do what is best for God and for others.

Ministers are called of God--many will not accept that reality--thus they condemn. Some ministers are "not" working within the definition of Christianity. Thus, for the naysayer, all churches--all ministers--all religions are bad for everyone involved. There are thousands of Churches and Ministers who do Christian work. It is good to have a place to go where there are kindred spirits. If you choose not to believe in any part of Religion--that is your choice--on day God will judge

You go to church to listen to the Minister so you will not be like the rest of society. That's what God wants you to learn. Be not of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

Good question but how can sinners hear without a preacher? How can we hear how to live holy without a preacher. How can we be led to Christ with out a preacher? Here is my point. There will always be someone, whether preacher or ordinary lay person who is saved, which must proclaim the Good News to this old, lost, dying, headed for demolition world to be used by God to save as many persons who will choose to get saved, before they die. We can not but help it.

You don't. But if you don't go to church, how would they continue to exercise influence? How would they continue to make money?

If you stay away from the preaching, you may eventually develop your own thoughts. This is rare, but happens. You may then be closer to leaving the religion itself.

No church or minister wants this to happen.

At one point in American history, slavery was an accepted practice. Did that make it ok then, but it is not ok now?
