Is there an affordable camcorder that will record for longer periods of time? If so what kind? I don't know anything about the different types of camcorders.....Would one that recorded on a dvd or vhs tape record longer? My husband and I have been noticing suspicious things around our house and we thought we would hide a camcorder to see what was going on. We figured a camcorder would be cheaper and easier to operate than security cameras plus we could also use it on trips and at get togethers and stuff....Thanks for your help!!

the least expensive would be an ordinary VHS that takes full size tape running in the EP or SLP mode. That will run 8 hours with extra length tape, or 6 hours with regular tape. Get one used from eBay or local shop. You will also need the AC adaptor because the batteries are not designed to run that long.

Not a good choice for home movies, big size and poor image and nearly obsolete, not for something you intend to replay in 10 years. A better choice for this is miniDV.

Aside from a full size VHS machine, I only know of one other type of machine which will record anywhere close to that long. The Hard Drive camcorders. I know Sony has a couple and I believe Panasonic or Sanyo does as well. I'm sure there are more, but depending on the Gb of the hard drive it will record up to 8 hours. Still at a relatively expensive price point, the cheapest one I've seen is $599.99. There are also some wireless Swann products, which will connect to a standard VCR and record for up to 8 hours. They start at around $180. Hope this helps

One reasonable option would be to combine a couple wireless webcams with computer security software. Record times would be limited by the size of your hard drive (in most cases dozens of hours).

The advantage of this type of setup is you can set the software to wake up when motion is detected, so that you are only recording if something actually happens, saving you time in reviewing the video later.

The other advantage of using a computer and webcams is you can often set them up to view the video feed from a Web browser, so you can actually check in on the video feed when you are away from home at your work.
