first you need to do cardio to help in showing off those luscious abs you are after! Cardio will help to blast off the fat and let everyone see those abs. Cardio like biking, running, elliptical workouts. Then move onto using a ball. One of those big balls you have probably seen at a gym but might not know how to use. Ask one of the persons there, they will help you out and if you feel intimidated just use it to do crunches on. Once you are more experienced with ab work use the machines or incline benches and then you can start to use weights.

If you are flabby around the middle (not saying you are) then it's best to lose some of the flab first, rather than do loads of sit ups for example, so for example, try some cardio exercises such as using the cross trainer, jogging.
If you are simply toning up your stomach to look more defined then full sit ups (keeping your hands behind your head (and elbows in line with your shoulders) are a good way to tone up, but what they call The Plank is a great way to firm up your abs. Look it up on the internet - hard to explain - you lie on your front and get in full press up position, but hold your body in a straight line off the floor (i'm useless at explaining this) - this will start to make your body shake after 30 seconds or so...keep practicing and each time try and hold the position for longer! The plank is great for what you are trying to achieve!
Cycle crunches are also good - lie on the floor in sit up position, as you bring your neck & shoulders off the floor, also bring your knee up to your chest and alternate knees.

My personal trainer says you should never use weight on your abs unless you're a body builder... think about it. Weight increases the size of your muscle, so your stomach will be bigger. Use your body's natural resistence and that will be enough to tone up.
Best exercises:
- crunches
- reverse crunches
- butterflies or flutters
- pulleys, or bicycle kick
- captain's chair
- hanging knee lift
