Larger complexes and coporations tend to be tougher on credit.

Private individuals renting their house or apartment often dont care as much , or simply dont want to waist the time pulling someones credit score. My dad has rented properties for 30 years has never pulled 1 credit score.

Many places may let you in if you are able to get down 2 months rent or lage security deposit. But just keep check around. Most places dont really seem to care much about credit when it comes to renting.

Offer somebody to put down a month's rent as a deposit. Worth a shot. That's what they do around here (VA) if somebody has bad credit.

Pretty much any large complex or rental agent will check credit. You might have more luck checking out rentals by individuals.

Morgy is VERY wrong when she responded "Stop using your credit card! It gets you in debt!" Is SHE that thick-skulled, to think that overzealous use of a credit card for "want" items(e.g., Prada shoes) is the only way to obtain bad credit???

The #1 cause of bankruptcy in the US is...surprise!...medical bills. As in, people without health insurance(due to unemployment, not having ins. offered thru employer but not making enough money at a min wage job to buy an ins. plan on one's own, etc) that have unexpected medical expenses. A short hospital bill for something as trivial as a bruise can rack up a bill as high as $5000!(trust me...happened to me before!)

Another cause of bad credit that isn't one's fault is ID theft, which is not common, but is becomming more common these days than it was in the past(due to so much info being shared on the Internet, etc).

You don't need to have ANY credit, to establish bad credit! All you need to do, is default on a simple bill such as a cell phone, electric bill, rent payment, etc...these "utilities" aren't reported on your credit report, UNLESS you default on payment and they get sent to collections!

There are many other ways that someone could have bad credit that might be partly their fault, but NOT due to bad intentions:
- person gets money stolen from him, therefore hindering him from being able to pay his bills that month
- person cosigns loan for son, daughter, or friend; then said son/daughter/friend defaults on loan
- person gets evicted from apartment for things that his roommate did, such as breaking a window, noise violation, etc.
- person becomes unemployed and now has no way to pay for rent or utilities
- person is too trusting to friend/boyfriend/girlfriend, and as a result said friend/bf/gf steals person's cell phone and racks up a huge $1000 cell phone bill that person doesn't have the money to pay back (this happened to my gay friend 3yrs ago!)

Point is, Morgy, is that you do NOT need credit cards OR greedy spending habits to establish bad credit! All you need is bad luck, bad circumstances, bad illness, being too trusting to the wrong people, etc. So keep that in mind next time you are quick to judge someone's bad credit situation! And just because this person has past credit problems, does NOT mean that the person is necessarily "irresponsible" or will continue to default on bills! Sometimes people LEARN from their past credit mistakes, and sometimes responsible people have bad credit merely because of things beyond their control!(medical bills, ID theft, friend stealing, etc.)
