The AA Trucker Road Atlas shows the heights of over 1,600 bridges and tunnels (very useful!).

The Philips Navigator Atlas has the best detail (largest scale).

It's always a good idea to pick up A to Z's or Red Books of towns and cities you are delivering to or picking up from. You will always go there more than once, and good local road atlases are vital.

If you do buy a GPS, remember, they are only a guide and often quite inaccurate. A paper map is always a better bet.

Best of luck in your new job! (I was a trucker for 15 years - I only gave up due to medical reasons.)

firstly if you drive alone its illegal to look at a map and drive at same time - thats the MAIN reason vans have them. alos some people cant find the way from the bed to the toilet without help so sat nav is a boon to them. if youre in an unfamillar area sat nav is a boon as it take the stress out or relying on a non-map reading passenger or breaking the law trying to drive and hold the map. once you know an area the sat nave becomes just a moving map for decoration!

AA Book of the road.

Also - consider a portable satnav. I think Tom Tom do a special HGV version, which takes weight and height restrictions into account.

Good luck!

Hi, well done for passing the test, but i think you might be better off these days with a gps system. I no it cost`s more but with the price of fuel and delays it could be worth a good look at them. The last link is just right for you..
