I thought being in the military, there was no risk of being laid off and stuff.

the Navy and AF are over manned.

As such, they are less likely to approve waivers for enlistment puproses and are more likely to process people out for minor infractions such as not passing the semi annual fitness test.

You don't get 'laid off' per se, but you won't necessarily be allowed to re enlist whe your time is up or you would not be caught under Stop Loss and not permitted to leave.

Additionally, not every job is over manned. there are some indeed that are undermanned and you definitely would have job security.

Well I don't know about the Navy, but the Air Force is indeed not allowing people in certain career fields to re-enlist. Mostly these people are first term airman and new LT's. If you've had a any bad performance reviews, or basically any other trouble, they will obviously look at you first.

Im active duty Air Force right now, and yes, they are cutting back, its called, "Force Shaping." The are to many people in certain career fields, and the one I'm in happens to be affected. The air force's plan is to cut close to 40,000 people by 2010 to save money and better utilize our force in numbers. I do not know about the navy, but i could see that happening too. Hope this helps!

I've heard this too. I've heard of people being kicked out for such minor offenses as getting a speeding ticket on base.

The Air Force doesn't need very many people. It's really just a way for alot of people to get a job that don't want really want to be military.

That is correct. It is called "Force Shaping". They are still recruting, but they are letting Active Duty get out early if they would like.
