I posted a question earlier in the week about augmetin. I am prescribed by my doctor, but oddly I have a horrible fear of reaction to medication (I panic) I know it sounds a little stupid but it is a scary thing for me. Anyways if I was to have and allergic reaction how long would I know before I started taking it. I have never taken this medication before so I a not sure if I will have a reaction. Also, the doctor is prescribing me 875mg...for sinus infection...however he didn't take a culture of anything how does he know it is a sinus infection without taking a culture? Can he literally just look up my nose and tell?

Sinus infections are easy to diagnose based on your symptoms and what you feel when he presses on your sinuses. For infections that the doc isn't sure about they can do sinus x-rays. Normally just your symptoms and your reaction when he presses your sinus bones etc is good for a diagnosis. As for an allergic reaction it can happen instantly or it can take days. There is no set time for how long before someone might react to med. If someone is severely allergic to a med it could be instantly or it can also take days. Augmentin is in the penicillin family so unless you are allergic to penicillin type drugs you should be fine.

First of all don't worry so much that can lead to a breakdown after taking the medication b/c your so worried about it. Mind is a very powerful thing and trust me you and really do a toll on yourself. Allergic reractions can occur very quickly... sometimes even minutes later..... I even had an account where my friends put meat in my sandwich and 2 hours later I felt itchy as I took my jacket off I was breaking out so bad and i hadn't eaten since the last time with my buddies..... I didn't kow what it was until the next day that I went to work they confessed.... they didn't really think I would react to Meat. However, you'll never know your allergic to something unless you take it. the doctor has your best intrest trust me... We can't just suggest random things that can harm you ...After all he has to save himself from getting sued... So those sinus pills are harmless if taken and not really in need for them but look at this way it can prevent future sinus attacks and if worse comes to shove take it for a few days and if you know for sure it's not tell him so you can stop taking them b/c it can also break down your immune system...
Well, good Luck and don't worry so much!

yes, the doctor can see an infection and not need to culture it immediately. Augmentin is a broad spectrum antibiotic and is usually successful in treating sinus problems if taken for a long enough period of time.
As for allergic reaction to oral medications, they will usually occur within 15 minutes of ingesting the pill.

I had an allergic reaction to a medication last week and then first sign i got were little red dots all over my legs or arms that last for about a day or two. but last year when i found out i was allergic to percocet my feet blew up really big, like i had a rash and were really super itchy, so watch out for those symptoms.
