I am assuming you are referring to DVD movies. There are 2 main ways to reduce the size of videos. First, you can strip away elements of the video. For example, you can get rid of the subtitles and foreign languages. Second, you can change the format of the video files. For example, most DVD movies, the ones you find at your local BlockBuster store, are saved using the MPEG-2 format. You can recode the movie in to another format which reduces the size of the video. For example, you can recode a MPEG-2 movie in to a MPEG-4 movie. The resulting MPEG-4 movie will be 1/10 the size of the orginal while perserving much of the video quality. There are several free software.

1. Strip away extras and compress movies - DVD Shrink (http://www.filehippo.com/download_dvdshrink/)

2. Recode videos in to another format - Dr. DivX (http://labs.divx.com/DrDivX)
