well as someone with tattoos I do have some rules of thumb that need to be followed as far as general rules and content on a tattoo
1.) Unless it's your child name or the name of a dead relative or a friend you were very close to those would be the only names I would suggest you get done NO GF OR BF NAMES!!!!! you don't want to be a walking etch-a-sketch and constantly getting them covered up or reworked if you breakup with the signifigant other the same goes for wives names with the exception being if you have been married 50+ years before the spouse's name is tattooed on you
2.) Choose a good artist from samples in the tattoo artist's shop or your own custom design to give it your own unique flavor and possibly watch a tattoo being done live if the artist will allow it to make sure they follow all the health regulations where you are as far as tattooing goes (you don't want to end up with hepatitis-c because someone used a dirty needle to do the tattoo remember this when it comes to that: NO LEVEL OF BODY ART IS WORTH EVENTUALLY DYING FROM A DISEASE OVER!!!)
3.) Unless the tattoo can count as a bracelet or something that could pass for a bracelet make sure the location where it is done is easily concealable with a long sleeved dress shirt with the sleeves up or down and pants because tattoos in a service industry and sometimes make customers go away from the place you are working at (the exceptions to this rule are custom harley or motorcycle shops and some auto restoration and auto detailing shops where having tattoos can often set the customer's mind at ease that you know what you are doing with some level of competency on the job)
4.) XXX tattoos such as bare breasted mermaids ect can be a turnoff for the general populace if viewed in inappropriate places at certain times (see general rule# 1 of tattoos that in my opinion should be common sense but is often ignored)
5.) Ask your tattoo artist to make the colors brighter and bolder then what is normally done if you get colors in your tattoo(s)
The reason I suggest this is that tattoos fade with repeated exposure to ultra violet light like being in sunlight repeatedly also exposure to the elements (rain, snow, frigid temperatures and scorching summer heat) can also fade a tattoo and if this is done in a year possibly 2 or 3 the colors will have faded and blended to the proper intended shades to really look good I have had this done by request on 3 out of 4 of my tattoos and trust me it works
and finally
6.) Make sure you are stone cold sober when the tattoo is done because as the skin scabs up which can be as quickly as 1 hour after it is done to 2-3 days possibly a week or 2 later the tattoo depending on size, color, level of detail and your body's ability to heal after getting injured will seep blood more frequently then they normally would due to the alcohol in your system when it is done (if the tattoo seeps blood for more then 24 hours consult medical attention immediately because either you or the tattoo artist did something wrong and it is best to catch it as fast as possible before it becomes a major health concern)

Is there a reason behind getting it done so soon? Tattoos should not be done on a whim (not suggesting you are) and a lot of thought should be put in ahead of time. If it's next week and you have no idea what to do about such a personal thing, i suggest wait. Really think about what you would like. What represents who you are, not just things you like at the moment. Do you want to honor family or friends? Represent individuality? What is the motivation? Take the time to figure out what really suits you and think about where it would feel right to you to put it. Research your local tattoo artists and learn about what goes into getting a tattoo and taking care of it. Some designs do not age well. Some spots hurt worse than others. Sun damages the tattoo. Certain spots age more so than others. Some artists don't keep a shop as clean as they should. Some are not very good artists. Really take the time to do it right. Don't rush in for the sake of it. If you think you won't go through with it if you do wait, that means you are not ready or do not really want one. If you do want it, take the time to really think about it and do your research and you will be so happy that you did. Tattoo shops are filled with countless people who regret their first tattoos because they didn't take the time to research first. Please do not become one of those! Whatever you decide, the best of luck and I hope that you will be happy no matter what you choose!!

I'm glad you are excited about getting your first tattoo, but if you don't have any idea what you want, please wait until you do. Do not just go into a shop and look in a book. Come up with your own ideas - things that mean something to you, either draw them up or take your ideas to an artist. If you are getting one next week or the week after, I would take that to mean you don't have an appointment. Don't just walk into any place that will take you on the fly. Schedule a time with an artist, go over your ideas, schedule a time for the work to be done.
Asking for suggestions from strangers is not the way to go. If you come up with something totally original, you will love that art for a life time. If you pick something out of the blue just for the heck of it, you'll be wondering what you were thinking later.
Just my two cents.

Hello,
the most of the tatoos which you can see in magazins or shops have anyone. I mean I have two tatoos. I designed them myself. If you want an original tatoo, search your mind and find the right one. If you are not very good for drawings, ask somebody who could do it.
Good luck with your tatoo and enjoy your life.

Your getting a Tattoo in a week... but you have no clue what you want? unless your planning on getting some crappy flash that everyone in the world has.... I would talk to an artist about something, Tattoo artist's love to do custom work and they will sit down with you and talk to you about ideas and how much it will cost to do this, call one up today and make an appointment to come in and talk to the guy/girl... you would be suprized at how much more satisfied you will be :)

If you don't know then don't do it! Your tattoo will be a part of you for a very long time and should represent that. Would you send your mum off to get you a set of clothes that you would have to wear for ten years straight? No! If you have a tattoo you need to be sure that you will want to wear it for fifty years. Take your time and make the right decision.

Just turn up and have a look at what they offer they should have loads to look through so you're bound to find one you like. Thats what I did for my first tattoo. Alternatively, why don't you design your own? That way it will be unique. I had my second one done at the weekend and I'm still in agony (its on my foot). btw, the tattooist recommended an ointment called Bepanthen which is usually used for nappy rash, but ensures that you don't get a massive scab.

Yes. Go to your artist and ask their opinion.
They will have sheets of flash art out, but if you want something different then perhaps take in a picture or an idea and they will be able to work something out if they are any good.
If they are not interested then perhaps you shouldn't be either.
