the #1 is in the top left corner on a phone, but bottom left on any other keypad, why?

With the first inception of touch tone, the switching system could not keep up with the dialer's who could dial faster. A quick solution from Bell Labs was to confuse the dialer. Later as the technology was developed ( twisted ring or Johnson counter) this was no longer a problem and it was not hurting anything so the pad was not changed back.

Originally, phone designers were trying to keep the two separate. They didn't want people to have trouble understanding how it worked. This is because people were coming from Rotary style phones and the push button phones were designed so that people could more easily realize that they were NOT calculators...
