People just got on with it back then. My grandad served in WW2 (as did most of his generation) and he wouldn't even talk about what he'd seen.

Nowadays squaddies think its great to brag and go on about how tough it is for them. Then they crack and cry for help.

Men aren't as tough as they used to be.

First off, there was virtually no counselling etc for the people who went through those conflicts. My dad was a WW2 veteran and it was basically a case of 'Your home - well done - now get on with it.'

As for the 14 Iranian prisoners - Yes they did suffer. HOWEVER, so have thousands of other British troops who have fought in various campaigns all over the world since WW2.

As for giving them the VC - No, simply, they do not deserve it. The VC is for OUTSTANDING COURAGE IN THE FACE OF THE ENEMY. EG The WW2 guy who was trying to blow up a tank with a hand held missile with half the Italian Army shooting at him.

Have a look at those people who have got the VC, read what they did to get it and compare it to the 14 prisoners - as I said 'no even close'

Men who go to war always suffer PTS. Its a fact of war! , No one who experiences the horrors of war can go unaffected by the consequences of warfare. in-fact there are several well known cases of 1st world war soldiers who where shot at dawn for cowardice because they simply could not face another day in the trenches. God only know what it must have been like for those BRAVE MEN!. Its now understood that these brave men where suffering from shell shock which is understood to a form of PTS.

Time they are a changing back in the 1st 2nd Korea Malay and to some extent the Vietnam wars - Men where men and they soaked up the sights and sounds of war suffered in silence (mostly) and just got on with life best they could!.

Now its 2007 and we have the human rights acts which seems to allow all sorts of malcontents to complain about what is perceived abuse of their human rights!. Didn't anyone ever tell them that being in the military can put you in harms way! and could lead to an untimely death!.

I was really shocked by the actions of some of the Iran 14 who really did let themselves down and make themselves look ridiculous cry babies. (pity they didn't inherit a bit of backbone from their fore farthest). Maybe the military ought to bring back early morning executions for such obvious cases mambypambyisum!..

Jeeeeezz!! They'll be asking for compensation next because their human rights have been abused, what a joke!

I think if Iran return the ipods and apologises for the Mr Bean comments then those 'brave souls' should be able to start rebuilding their lives.

As for the old days, PST is a relatively new phenomenon and I believe there is counselling available for military personnel.

The other type of standard stress is also a fairly new phenomenon that seems only to affect those in a PAYE scheme. I don't know of one single self employed person that suffers from Stress (Traumatic or otherwise!).

America is testing Ecstasy for PTS.
the results are still pending.
my grandfather returned from a Concentration Camp in Korea following the fall of Japan, he spent several months in a purpose built re-hab centre in Sussex. My Nanna cried when she first saw him he was obviously painfully thin, but he just couldn't stop shaking, saw things that weren't there & almost lost his remaining marbles.
those purpose built hospitals exist no longer, the Armed Forces are now taken care of by the NHS.
Hence why returning soldier having been on a Public ward, was abused by a Muslim patient, in the next bed!
The nursing staff insisted he remove his uniform, even though he had internal injuries & open wounds.
more shame on Mr B'Liar, in his attempts to save money to pay for the Iraq war, the MOD have closed or shelved military hospitals & leaving the already over-stretched NHS, with more demand.
And i do not see why any of the Iranian detainees warrant medals, sorry.
the youngest, mr bachelor has been snapped in a night-club, blindfolded & with the two-finger gun, pointed at his head.
& that's hardly the attitude/behaviour of a stressed out or in shock soldier, is it?

Ya, the 14 had it real rough, ROFL, I think all they have is a funny story to tell their grandkids.
For others tho' PTSD was a real deal, and in the past some suffered from it their entire lives. Others were able to put it behind them and get on with life. Not a bit different than it is today.
