Hi,
I am not an interior designer, but have picked up a few hints over the (too many) years...
Dark colours tend to make a room look smaller, so use a light colour for your small room. I don't think the actual shade matters, just choose a colour that pleases you and make sure it is light.
Mirrors strategically placed on one wall can make the room appear MUCH bigger (anything up to twice as big.) It may look even bigger if you allow the recurring reflections to go into the distance (imaginative use of, say, lacy flowing curtain material at each side of the mirrors can enhance this space illusion.
Try to store most things away from the centre of the room, if you have an area of space it will make the room look bigger. Perhaps use a slightly smaller table, if there is one in the room, or get rid of it. Don't have too much 'clutter' in there, as this stresses the lack of space.
Good luck anyway, Hope this non-expert advice helps at least a little,
Cheers,
BobSpain

Use light shade of your favorite color on the walls, white or ivory on ceiling.
Pick a print or brighter version of same color for bed, drapes, pillows.
Match all picture frames, lamps, accessories in a second color. Add a mirror to the 'tall' wall to reflect space.
Add a large rug to 'unite' the room, in one of the colors already used.
Add a plant.

Pale colours are best. Or pale colours on 3 walls and a solid "accent colour" on one. What the snobs call a "focus wall". Avoid at all costs figured wallpaper, no matter how big the design it will box you in.
The pale colours make the room look lighter and bigger, and you can paint your baseboards the darker accent colour if you like, or use it in curtains etc.
Using mirror tiles on one wall can help too, if you like that sort of thing. They reflect however much light there is.
