I never capitalize *god* because I do not believe in any deity, and while I respect christians as people I do NOT have to respect a fake deity....if I don't believe something exists how can I show respect? I also do not capitalize christian...it's NOT a proper name so why use a capital c?

I thought the Christian god's name was 'Yadweh'? I could well be wrong, but if I'm correct then god would not require a capital letter.
Like I wouldn't write Footballer David Beckham but I supppose I spell 'I' with a capital 'I' and that isn't my name....
By the way, can anyone confirm if the Christian god's name is 'Yadweh'.....i've no idea where I got it from but seem to recall that I read it somewhere

It depends how you use it, for example:- my god is the one and only God.
Irrespective of any religious beliefs, if you use a word as an proper noun or a real name, then you use a capital letter.
If you said to someone:- you are a twit, and then said I shall therefore name you Twit, then when you say hey Twit come here meaning that one person, it is different to saying to a child that runs out in the road you twit come here.
Does that help?

Hmm. I capitalise because it's (theoretically) a proper noun. But I'm increasingly uncomfortable with giving any credence or hint of respect to this imaginary, psychotic narcissist.
Maybe I'll try gOD in future.

Christians use it as a name for their Deity.
and they want you to respect it (and only it).
if you speak of any other Deity, it's the god Thor or the goddess Hera or whatever.
The schools and universities will correct it with a capital g as well if it's the Christians god, and lowercase if it's any other.

All names are spelled with capitals. When writing about God the pronoun that refers to Him is also with a capital/ I have a dog and I write her name with a capital letter any person 's name MUST have a capital.

It depends on whether you are referring to a god in general or 'God' as the name of a specific deity. I don't believe in the personification of god so I never spell it with a capital (except at the start of a sentence).

The biblical god is imaginary. I don't think a deity would possess the human flaws of jealousy and smite. He would not murder millions of people for misbehaving. It is ludicrous.
I do capitalize when I am speaking of the God I think exists.

In a monotheistic religion, God is a proper noun.
If writing about Judaism, you may not even spell it completely.
G_d is the norm.
