I can't remember exactly, but wasn't Eve's punishment that she wold experience terrible pain during childbirth, Adam's was something about ploughing in fields, and the serpent, who SCREWED EVERYTHING UP remember, was told he would crawl on his belly for all eternity. Didn't he already crawl on his belly? what did he do before, fly? What sort of a punishment is that, bit lenient don't you think?

To Eve he said "thou shall pay with pain and blood" and Eve pleaded to the Lord: " Can I please pay with easy monthly installments?"

I'm way out of my league here I think, but it is my understanding that the serpent was a figurative term given by his actions...."his" being the devil, a former angel, who appeared before Eve disquised. (thus the term snake in the grass...)
Now he didn't screw everything up for Adam & Eve! His purpose has always been chaos! He tempted them...God gave them free WILL , WE have to live with their choices. What? wait a minute, that's not fair!
Now really, if you were a flambuoyant, egotistical, self-serving angel like ol' satan was, crawling on your belly would be a helluva punishment!!
Now that I am confused, hope that helps? :)

The story of Adam and Eve is just that, a story. In fact, there are TWO creation stories in Genesis and they are not the same.

The purpose of the story or myth is to explain why things are the way they are. To people 3,000 years ago this made sense. This part of the myth seeks to explain why life is difficult.

@Arms Open Wide: don't be so hard on your pelvis! The reason childbirth is painful is because our heads are too big.

In time, even if natural childbirth is kept, I'm sure we'll develop some kind of hatch that can be opened to remove our big-headed babies. Then we can go back to evolving bigger heads - hopefully with more brain in 'em - without the risk of splitting you female types asunder.

On the evidence, we don't have enough.

call it a punishment or the consequence of disobedience is not that lenient as it may seem. the fact that the mere separation of the creature from their Creator is quite horrible. being severed from God because of sin is a serious and absolutely results to spiritual death and impending physical death. when Adam, eve, and the serpent said yes to sin (fighting God), is also saying no to their life Giver.

The serpent's punishment is figuritive of his disassociation with God and his binding to the Earth. Probably the worst punishment because there is no redemption for him to be reconciled with God and be in God's light.

evolution...
humans have painful child birth because our hips are too narrow (which is the only reason we walk up right as well!)
Obviously the snake had feet or wings. lol
the other punishment is that the children of women and snake would be enemies and kill eachother.
Good question.
Why wasn't the serpent banished at least?

Apparently, the snake used to have legs. And you forgot the second part of the curse:

Genesis 2:15 And I will put enmity
between you and the woman,
and between your offspring and hers;
he will crush your head,
and you will strike his heel."

The serpent had legs. Coincidentally, some snakes do have remnants of legs.
