Tricky. If the realio, trulio Creator of the Universe gave you such an order - and had shown no previous sign of malicious intent, I'd figure he was trying to make a point or going to pull a rescue stunt. So I'd probably go through the motions, while quietly advising said son that I would actually do it.

If no heavenly 'That's enough!' actually happened when I had the knife at the kid's throat, I'd put it down and dare Yahweh to do his worst. If He wants to play like that, I'm out of the game.

To suggest that Abe deserves praise because he was really gonna do it is disgusting, and a rejection of all human values.

Oh God to be like Prophet Abraham it's so difficult

Verily, Ibrâhim (Abraham) was an Ummah (a leader having all the good righteous qualities), or a nation, obedient to God , Hanifa (i.e. to worship none but God ), and he was not one of those who were Al-Mushrikûn (polytheists, idolaters, disbelievers in the Oneness of God , and those who joined partners with God ). (An-Nahl 16:120)

And, when he (his son) was old enough to walk with him, he said: "O my son! I have seen in a dream that I am slaughtering you (offer you in sacrifice to God ), so look what you think!" He said: "O my father! Do that which you are commanded, Inshâ' Allâh (if God will), you shall find me of As-Sâbirin (the patient ones, etc.)." (As-Saffat 37:102)

Then, when they had both submitted themselves (to the Will of God ), and he had laid him prostrate on his forehead (or on the side of his forehead for slaughtering); (As-Saffat 37:103)

And We called out to him: "O Abraham! (As-Saffat 37:104)

You have fulfilled the dream (vision)!" Verily! Thus do We reward the Muhsinûn (good-doers - see V.2:112). (As-Saffat 37:105)

Verily, that indeed was a manifest trial (As-Saffat 37:106)

And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice (i.e. - a ram); (As-Saffat 37:107)

It's a different time, a different place, and a different society. If I was Abraham, surrounded by societies that practiced child sacrifice and claimed it was by God's directive, and then heard a voice that told me to do likewise, I might start wondering whether there might be something to it, especially when that same voice told me my long past barren wife was going to conceive and she did so. It's easy for some to judge Abraham now, but then we have the advantage of 1000's of years of further revelation.

I would have flipped "him" the bird and taken my only son out to play some desert golf.

Many will profess that they have the faith of Abraham, but when it comes to my son, I doubt I would have that amount of faith. He is deserving of much respect and admiration.
