up until this past saturday i was a smoking mom, however i refused to smoke while pregnant, feeling that the child should not pay for my habit, and choosing my kids over my habit, but I always started back up again. I felt bad for smoking in the house, so i stopped. i stopped smoking in the car, but that made cross country hell.
you cant quit because of someone else, but you can look at it like this, you can quit because you want to see the birth of your grandchild, or some other milestone. for me it was me wanting to see my grandbaby graduate from high school in 18 years, but felt that if i smoked i would not. just call 1-800-quit-now, might be life changing for you.

I smoked for almost 20 years before I fell pregnant with my son. It wasn't easy, but I gave up smoking there and then.

To be honest, the biggest single motivator for me was the fact that children of smokers are twice as likely to smoke themselves. I really didn't want to pass that inheritance onto my little boy.

I'm sure you know all about the physical harm caused by smoking around your child, both during pregnancy and after they're born. In addition, I worried about the emotional damage it does. Kids these days are fully aware of the consequences of smoking. It must be hard for a child to watch the people it loves most in the world slowly killing themselves.

Personally, I've always found it easy to give up, it's the staying off them that's been the hard part and even today, I still fancy a cigarette from time to time, but it's so fleeting, it's gone in a moment. I guess I'll always have that, but I'd never go back now, I want to give my son every chance of being a non smoker himself.

Never stop giving up. One day it'll just click, you will do it. Good luck to you.

I have a few friends who are mothers and they smoke. As long as u don't smoke in front of the kids or have them breathing in the 2nd hand smoke, i don't see why anyone should judge you. As much as protecting your children from the smoke is good, its best that they grow up without the fear of losing their mum to smoke related ailments.I'm a smoker myself and I know its a very hard thing to quit. I think its very admirable that you managed to stop smoking while u were pregnant. Good Luck with your efforts to quit for good.

Been there, done that 3 times. My children are teens now and talk to me once in a while about how they wish I would quit smoking. They don't smoke and probably never will and I am glad. It is a bad habit and I don't know if I will ever quit. But smoking is really my only bad habit. I don't drink, do drugs, or fool around on my husband. I pay all my taxes, respect my non-smoking friends and dispose of my mess correctly (I don't pitch my "butts" out side or empty my ash trays in parking lots). I don't smoke around babies/toddlers and I always have a window open in my car if I light up. I don't smoke anywhere in my house except on the first floor (living room, dine or office area.). My kids have "smoke free" zones .... all bedrooms, bathrooms & family room. And I wash coats, curtians & carpets frequently to keep the house smelling clean & fresh for them. If I am to be condemed for my one bad habit so be it....I do my best with who I am. If all the non-smokers of the world would ban against drugs & child abuse as zelotly as they go after smokers the world would be a better place.

I don't smoke and I know it is a very hard addiction to give up.

I have a step daughter who has asthma and her mother and step dad are constantly smoking around her. If i was smoking and my child had Asthma I would do everything in my power to prove to my child that i care enough about her to give up this addiction. There are alot of facts out there to prove what 2nd hand smoking does to children and for the kids i would definately find a way to stop!

I think it's ignorant for anybody to start nowadays in the first place! It's no secret how hard it is to stop. There is no excuse for a woman especially to be crying about how hard it is to stop because most likely when you chose to start smoking you already knew that someday you were going to have children!

There are MILLIONS of people trying to quit and people are still starting everyday- those people are losers and probably deserve whatever they get but their children do not!

I'm not a smoker, but my mother is. She smoked while pregnant and in front of my sisters and I. As an adult now, I think she was selfish for putting her habit in front of the health of her children. I know it's hard, but I would do whatever you can to quit, it's not healthy for you and it's not healthy for your kids.

I was a smoker for years. Got pregnant and I quit numerous times while I was pregnant. Never for good though. People may call it selfish and maybe it is but I just couldn't do it even though I wanted to. I felt absolutely awful that I couldn't quit for good. I always thought it would be easier to quit once I found out I was pregnant, its not. But the guilt is incredible. Once I quit breastfeeding my daughter I started taking welbutrin (zyban). It helped ease the cravings enough that I was able to quit for good finally. So I would definitely suggest trying one of these. Zyban is the actual "quit smoking" drug. Welbutrin is an antidepressant that is the same thing as Zyban but your insurance should cover it whereas they may not cover Zyban. Good luck.

I was a smoker for years but as soon as i found out i was pregnant, i stopped. my childs health means more to me than anything so it was simple. ofcourse i found it difficult for a while but i still did it. he's now 5 and i've never had one since. i wouldn't want my child to smoke so i try to lead by example. i think its pretty disgusting for any parent to smoke in front of their child anyway, especially those who smoke in the same room. just think about your childs needs, not your own. just be strong. i look at people now who spend like £6.00 on a pack of cigs & pitty them. at the end of the day, why pay for something that damages your health? stopping is the best thing i've ever done. will power is the best way.

You should feel very proud of yourself!! I know alot of women that smoke through their entire pregnancy because they can`t kick the habit..Good Luck to you!
